  • Notes from the Director...

    May 14, 2013

Here are some thoughts about our space needs. I am listing three options- there may be more - details still need to be flushed out.

I have received several suggestions already - interesting possibilities, the more the merrier.

I have received mulitple suggestions that we look for space at College of the Redwoods. While I think that would be an ideal situation, it does not appear to be possible as they are moving toward a lease with a charter school (expanding) for the available space. We have a received couple other possibilities that I will be checking out this week.

I haven't worked out all the financial stuff to figure out what we can pay-- but I am thinking roughly $1,000 a month is the limit for the medium - no studio-- kind of space.

If we could find space for a studio, we would try to see if we can acquire donations, to be able to afford it.

This last winter in the Footlighters building, it cost us almost $1,000 a month in propane just to heat the office - no heat in studio.

Here is a general idea of what we need - it goes from a just keeping MCTV alive at a very basic level to a full on studio/office. I hope we can find a home we can afford that is at least in the middle of these options

Have to have no matter where we go:

  • street level with outside entry and easy loading of vehicles as we frequently need to load huge amounts of equipment to cover meetings, etc. - second stories not a good idea

  • availability of Comcast cable tv and,

  • a bathroom

  • would like to be in a place the public can find and be able to come to easily.

    Square Footage: options

**** note: for info on playback equipment and fiber optics, see below

      1) Minimal - 600 sq feet - just basically an office to edit and keep some of our equipment- using storage for most of our equipment. Not at all the first choice, just survival in some form.

      2) Workable for more functions = 1000- 1200 Sq Ft - could have a couple editing work stations, room for equipment, perhaps minimal production with green screen set up.

      3) 2500 + Sq Ft. - adding 1500 to the plan above to provide enough space for small studio which would be great, but we can't afford it without more funding or some exchange for services, or ?

The space could be one room that we divide up or a combination of rooms two large rooms, or even three or four separate, but ideally, joined, rooms.

Our power needs in options 1 and 2 are not high. Option 3, for a studio with lighting the power needs go up. Hard to say how much now as it depends on ceiling height, etc.,

**** I am hoping to locate the Comcast fiber optics and our playback equipment (video servers, modulators, etc) some place permanent rather then a leased space- working on locating this separately.
